Fish Lake twice in a week
#1
I hit Fish Lake this past Wednesday and today. Wednesday I took a friend for his first ice fishing trip ever. We found plenty of rainbows and splake in 20 FOW. Found even more splake in 50 FOW that were cruising around 30-40 feet down. We had better luck in 20 FOW. We caught a lot of smaller fish with the occasional keeper thrown in the mix. Even had several schools of perch cruise through so we waded through perchettes to get a few keepers.
I did a repeat trip today with my little brother and my sons. We had a good time even though the wind was a huge pain. Still found fish, caught fish, and managed some decent keeper trout and perch. The trout are headed for the smoker tomorrow and the perch are going to be made into a batch of TD perch chowder.

HUGE shout out to JustJim for all the tips and help. He made our trips successful. All I did was follow his excellent instructions and take fish off the hooks. I attached some dead fish pics from both days. Didn't take another picture of the perch because they looked like the ones in the first pic!

Thanks for the report. I am taking a buddy of mine there this weekend. He has never caught a splake or lake trout, so hopefully we will have some luck like you did.

What would you say an average ice thickness was?

Good going, I was there on Friday and had about the same luck as you. The wind and snow was another story. Wind tore my tent apart and the snow drifts had three trucks stuck. Had to wait for the snow plows to clear the road so we could get out of there.

It was nearly 16 inches thick everywhere we drilled. Lots of snowmobiles, ATVs, and fat guys like me on the ice. The rainbows cruised pretty shallow (5-10 feet where we were) and the splake were deeper. Most of the splake I caught were about a foot or two off the bottom. We didn't go out deep enough for Lakers. Hope y'all have a good time.

We caught several bait size perch that got cut up or put back down the hole. We caught a fair number in the 6-8 inch range. Definitely not Cascade class perch but fun!
