Deer Creek Fiasco
#1
Went to Deer Creek State Park yesterday - got there around 8:00 AM there was a guy leaving as we got there. Not sure if it was him or someone else but somebody had covered their freshly drilled holes with snow - one of which I discovered with my left leg. I found another hole a few feet from the first similarly camouflaged - it was impossible to tell they were there. I am luck I only scraped it up and did not break it. A boot full of water in below freezing temperatures does not make for a fun time. We stayed about two hours and only got three bites - no fish [:/]

Bummer, I hate it when people fill their holes back up instead of just leaving them open so they can be seen.

Some people fill their hole in with snow hoping it wont freeze. I guess they don't want to drill the next day.. Dose make it hard on the little ones though..

Makes it hard on the big ones too. I had a similar experience at Strawberry, but it was because the wind was blowing and covered all of the holes with snow. I had a scar on my shin where the hammer hit it (another long story) getting my foot back out of the hole without loosing my boot.

The state park at walsburg? I was leaving about that time, but I didnt not cover any of my holes I punched. I walked down the ramp and went to the left toward sailboat beach. I fished off that point. I did mark fish, but was unsuccessful at catching anything. That is a bummer that happened. Some of my holes, I noticed, were partially frozen back up.

Were you certain that at it was someone's hole? I fell through on one leg up to my groin a week and a half ago. I was thinking the same thing but I went over near where I fell in and I chipped away at the edge of the hole. There was a big spot where the ice was just about 2 inches of soft crappy ice, then straight water. I chipped a big ol hole away, about 3 feet across. This was Jan 25 though, when it was really warm.

Yea, that is a very dangerous situation for sure. I've had the same thing happen at Mantua before and my first thought was, as my foot was going through the hole, is this a bad spot in the ice and will I go all the way through[shocked], because it was very slushy all around. Not sure why people cover up holes like that but it can be very dangerous for small kids, especially if they are 10" holes.

My nephew was doing that on several holes when I wasn't watching him, he thought it would make them freeze up faster. We scooped them back out of course, and I explained that holes filled with snow or slush take a lot longer to freeze over and that they're hard to see.

That is why my 4 year old has to wear a life jacket when she is on the water so to speak. I think she would fit in a 10 inch hole. One of my biggest fears of ice fishing with the kids.

I really don't think people even consider how small kids are. Some years ago a kid fell through a small well pipe about 10", it could have been a little bigger but it made Nation wide news, as the workers trying to get the kid out, had to dig a hole beside the well to get to him.

I remember watching that. It must have been 30 years ago. "Baby Jessica" I believe.

Yes, that was one of them but there was another one as well, I think the other one was a boy but it has been a long time ago. That Baby Jessica one had everyone sitting on the edge of their chairs, I think everyone breathed a sign of relief when they pull her out.
