Hey guys - heading up to Bear Lake for the long weekend for a getaway with my wifey. We are hoping to get a little time on the ice. We are staying at ideal beach resort - so i know the rock pile can get pretty busy. we might look at any other spots as well. I don't have a snow mobile nor a 4wheeler, so can't go really far but I don't driving to different places or over to the east side.
Years ago shore fishing (we only had waverunners so we carried line out and dropped) I hooked into the fish of a life that got off, I've caught 20-24 inch fish before, and this thing felt like it could have eaten them! I've been addicted to the idea of catching anything like that since. Everyone has a story of the one that got away though
I have seen a few updates on the fishing - can any one give a recent update on ice conditions? And if any one is willing to share any tips for general locations, depths, bait - basically I've seen tube jigs with meat. I'll have to check cabelas for anything besides the little red sided shiners - would love any help! PM is great as well.
- thanks.

I will be traveling down as well for the first time in years to fish the "Great Blue". Been a long time since I have been on that lake but I'm sure not much has changed. We are staying at the Worldmark by the State Boat Marina so I just figured I would walk out from there a little ways. I'll be wearing gray wool pants and a blue Carhartt coat. Ice from what I have been told is solid but with this sun and warmth the last couple days the day might be a little soft. I'm taking a narrow piece of plywood just in case. I also have been told white tube jigs have been the best producer. I plan on fishing in 15-30 f.o.w. Good luck and maybe I'll see ya down there or up there in your case![ ![Wink Wink](https://bigfishtackle.com/forum/images/smilies/wink.png) ]

Use sucker meat or cisco if you can find some. Tube jigs in white with red highlights, kastmasters in silver or gold, single cisco with just a weight and a treble too. Use a flasher if you have one. Fish on bottom and maybe 3' up. The fish have been all over the place, some are in 60-70 FOW and others are catching in 17-30 FOW, and I would imagine that there are fish in between too, lol. Best thing to do is drill a hole away from the crowd, your chances will increase just because of that. Don't expect it to be fast and furious, the bigger fish will cruise through eventually. It is good too if you are marking smaller fish on the flasher right on bottom (probably whitefish) if you see those down there, then a bigger fish will come through eventually to eat a few, haha... good luck and have fun!

I'm in the same boat!
I want to give it a try. I wouldn't mind targeting whitefish. I hear they are tasty off the smoker!
We are going up Monday if anyone wants to join.

I hope you are doing better than we are. We are marking a few fish but can't get them to bite.

Fished the S.E. point of the marina this morning. Hooked and landed 3 nice natives and 1 Utah Chub[laugh] This one in the photo was the prettiest of the day. Noticed lots of other groups catching a ton of Whitefish but no other Natives or Macks that I am aware of were pulled in.

We made it out by the rock pile in the afternoon finally. Slow getting out here today, but still have tomorrow and Monday.
No bites though, hopefully tomorrow we can come across something. We didn't get as deep as we should have, only around 25 ft but we were so late I didn't want to waste more time trying to move again.

It think we were the group just to the north of ya. We had 4 adults and 4 kids. We caught about 20 whitefish, but no trout. The wind came up and drove us off, but it was pretty fun while it lasted.

If he is catching cutts and macks I am impressed. If he is catching whitefish no big deal. Lots of whitefish were caught yesterday on the rock pile and we were after macks and cutts.

Started early by the rock pile, one small Mack starting out and one native cutty a few hours later after moving out and away. Both were 17-18 inches. Was hoping for the white fish. Used white tube jig with sucker and a small cast master with a piece of shiner for the cutt. Didn't have any missed bites even, but I don't have a fish finder to see if I was missing fish.

I was up there with FFL. I believe he ended up landing 6, all cutts. The biggest going 22". They were good looking fish.
I caught a nice fat skunk. Had one bite all day, got it about half way up, and she got off. Luckily it didn't feel very big, but I was hoping to avoid a shut out. Ah well. It was nice being up there out of this nasty air for a day. Weather was beautiful.

Whitefish are not difficult to catch. You want to get out there early and fish with a small lure right on top of the rock pile. The rock pile is about a 3/4 mile walk out on the ice from Ideal Beach. Look for the place with holes drilled everywhere and you have found the rock pile. Tip your lure with a piece of night crawler, meal worm, wax worm or salmon egg. If your lure is over about 1/2 inch off of the bottom you will not catch any white fish.

I second Kents recommendation of keeping it close to the bottom. The closer I was to the bottom the more bites I got, however it comes with a price, I lost 3 lures. Good luck if you get back. Later J
