Fished Smith and Morehouse this past weekend. Saturday and today we got really late starts due to it being a family affair and kids wanting to sled more than fish. Saturday a buddy hooked something that peeled drag and got off when it hit the bottom of the THICK ice. Today we landed a small bow and the. Right before leaving I booked a small fish, upon further inspection I realized I hooked a Koke through the ice. Yes is was small but still an interesting catch. The question I have is why is it red this time of year? Also at this size would they even spawn? Not a big koke officianto so anyone out there that could shed some light that would be awesome.

Thanks for the report! Was going to try and head up there this upcoming weekend. How is the road up? Would I be able to make it in a quad or do I need a snowmachine? Awesome Koke, btw. I know they recently stocked the reservoir with small fry, maybe that one is just defective.

Looks like they are growing faster than expected. They should be at catchable lengths this summer. As far as it mutating to red for the spawn?
I know that they changed to spawn and they die. I really never heard of them changing like that and stay alive.


I would send that pic to the biologist over the lake. He could provide an explanation as to why it's red this time of year!

Yeah I was bit shocked to see it the way it was. I had heard they stocked those and as surprised at how big it was. I will send the pic that's a good idea. As far as the road goes, we were on a rzr with tracks but there were two atvs up there. We went in the south end but being as warm as it is, it was slushy in the afternoon. I think an atv would be ok but stay on the packed trails.
