Ice breaker
#1
So with the current 30+ degree temperature increase how long do you think we have left on the different bodies of water? I seen Cutler / Bear River open up last week but the current and shallow water makes them act faster to freeze and faster to thaw. What do you think one more weekend of ice???? Later J

High elevations will remain iced. Lower elevations dangerous if any left.

Ya know last weekend it was 70 deg at 9000ft makes you wonder how long things will hold up high. Looked like open water in Willard north marina tonight so don't know how long I'd trust that one. Later J

I think you'll be cat fishing before Whitney turns soft, but some days it's hard to tell. Kind of turning the corner into my slowest season of the year so I'll probably drag my feet hoping the ice will last. Later J

I'm half tempted to pull the boat out to Willard and troll some shad raps around a while! What little ice there may be left is probably breakable with my boat...I am so ready for wiper season!!!

How is Willard for wipers just after ice off?

I'm not sure it's quite that time yet, still lots of ice on the main water body... I could see that the channel going in and out of the marina was opened but that was only for a small area, better wait a couple days before your try your ice breaker... But I agree that it sounds like fun to start trolling again... won't be too long now... Later J

I was able to get out to the end of Farmington bay breaking through 3" of ice this winter! kinda dicey though...lol. I was able to step out of the boat and onto the ice and jump without any cracking at all...
I know it'll still be a while for things to heat up though. A buddy of mine shared a post from last year on Valentines day with two 25" hog wipers that he lucked into trolling. I don't think I started catching til the end of March into April. I wont be out for a while, just wishful thinking! lol

I've been monitoring Utah Lake about once a week now. Last week it was totally iced over (Lincoln) and did not even appear close to opening up. Still a few die-hards working the first spring and one guy drilling a hole off the end of the launch. Water level might be up an inch or two and there is a heavy flow coming in at the Benjamin Slough. Won't be long now until the walleye guys start up. Maybe with the warmer weather and some rain and wind it will start to break up. I say March 15th???

Can't wait. Might have to go out and throw rocks to speed up the process. I'm ready.

Last year was a different year, I planted peas in early February and I'm pretty sure it will be March at best this year, maybe May. Be careful breaking that much ice, the back corners of the boat can cut through when you turn. My Dad had to rescue a load of goose hunters one year on Cutler when they found that out as it sunk their boat. Not a good thing to have happen. But I don't blame you for wanting to hook up to a wiper. I'm hoping we get either safe ice or open water and not the in between where you can't do either. Good luck J

I know I want to get out on Willard after those wipers. Although if it was ice free it would still be too cold water temps.

Heard rumor today that the main body on Utah Lake was mostly open besides the harbors. Thinking about pulling out the tube this weekend.[Smile]

I'll bet you're all rested up and ready to go. It's been a long winter for you. Got anything new to throw at the cats this year? Kevin was working me to get the catfish contest ready to go. So I guess I better start thinking about that again. Hope we can have some fun with it again this year. I might see if I can get a committee together this year to help round up some prizes and such. Hope you're into it again? Well thanks for the ice report. Later J

I agree, it's always hard for me to start catching those warm water fish in the spring they are slow starters for me. So I'm not too nuts for open water yet. Later J

Ya know I always get too excited and go burn a lot of kitchen passes when the fishing isn't much good and then in April / May when it's the best, I have to catch up on missed honeydoos or farm chores. Looking back over three years of personal records I should know better than to fish too much this next two months, but I'm a slow learner, I'll probably still try it, at least a little. Later J

If it (the ice) was weak at all this wind will probably clear it off. What a wild storm up north. If not it should blow dry the slush off, maybe that's just wishful thinking there. But would be nice. Anyway keep your tents tied down today. Later J
