As the wind blows !!!
#1
I did not get to go to the lake today, but it appears that last night's wind has started the process of clearing the ice off Utah Lake. Will got out to AF Harbor tomorrow to get a closer look. The time is short !!! Let the games begin !!

So I have an update for this post. I checked out AF boat harbor today, to see what was going on with the ice.

The inner harbor was locked up solid. Some open water at the entrance, but still pretty choked up otherwise.

There was a lot of open water between AF and Lindon and more open water to the north, couldn't tell how far north.

You can launch a tube or tune off the north side of the harbor or around the entrance, but not sure how long it will be till then rest of the harbor is gone. Weather forcast is for a blow in the next few days, so we may have some luck.

One last thing. Water level. There is water in Mud Lake ( south provo ) and Hobble Creek and AF river have water in them, so some of the runoff has started and the lake level is coming up. In addition, they have pretty much shut off the water going out of the lake, so that is a good sign also.

Keep your toes crossed !! ( can't cast with your fingers crossed !!)

Did my weekly drive-by at Lincoln today. Nothing close to open water. The water level is up a bit and the ice is pulling away from the shore but nothing close to fishable water. The Benjamin Slough inlet is open for a 100 yards or so out and the launch channel has open water on one side. A couple of guys fishing the first spring but that's about it. We need a big wind to push all the ice back to the north end.[Wink]

I still say March 15 before she opens up.

BLK, one of these times we are going to meet up down there, I test drove a dump truck down there today, seen the county boys putting fertilizer on the lawns, I told them they need to dredge it out, he said he would let them know but don't hold your breath, I would feel better about launching if that red buoy would stand up strait, I cant remember how long the counter balance is, I am hoping for the south wind to[Wink]

I'm sure we will meet down there one of these days, for sure when the fishin' starts to warm up. Look forward to it.

That red buoy will have to go before any serious launching can be done. If we have to wait for the county to get it moved it will be mid-May or so. Last year someone, and I have no idea who, hooked on to it and dragged it up out of the way when it was conveniently parked at the end of the ramp.

I'm kinda anxious to see how the lights work that have been installed on the poles at the end of the channel. Solar powered? I wonder if they are working yet? I might have to ride out there some night to check it out..

Ice go away!

your post reminded me that I didnt see any "abyss" posts this year. Maybe they all got posted in the secret inner sanctum room and no one else saw them. Or maybe no one went out there this year?

[#0000FF]The lake capped over enough to venture out to the Abyss right after Christmas. But it was not worth the effort. With the low water conditions there was only about a foot of water beneath the ice all around that deep anomaly. Not enough to draw in the fish as in most years. There were a few holdovers that had made it into the hole before the lake dropped too low and then froze over, but not enough to justify the long hike out.

Had one report of a guy drilling test holes on the way out...to check ice thickness...and pulling up mud on the end of his auger after it went through the ice. And that was only a short distance from the edge of the deeper hole.

Thanks TD. Thank goodness we got some good snow this year, I hope it's enough to fill that big bathtub full of water!
