Bear Lake1/23 (Mack photo added)
#1
Fished Bear Lake with FishingWaters. First we went and got our limits of cisco in just a few scoops. Fishingwaters got some vidio stream and said he'd try and post it. I got some vidio of a non-stop stream of cisco for over 3 minutes. I got my limit of cisco in about 4 scoops. We ate some of them and they are tasty. After the cisco fishing we headed down to second point and fished in 100 ft water and had a number of fish on the graph but they were reluctant to bite. Fishingwaters got an 18" mack. I got a 22" mack in 45 ft while trying for whitefish using a Swedish pimple with a maggot on a dropper and 2 lb test line, definately a thrill trying to get him through the ice. Had a good time, thanks fishingwaters.

I had started the upload of the video stream this morning. Then I had to go get some work done. Here are the links to the video steams. They are large file and each one will take about 20 minutes on a dialup to download.

If anyone needs someone to net cisco for them, Fish1onJR. is addicted and willing to work for free!!! He already has his limit but is willing to help with yours!

Fishnate,

sounds like another great day at the Bear, wish I was there to partake in the fun. I have yet to get a Mack in hard or soft water but my chance is drawing near!!

fish1on I'm envious that you have the ability to spend so much time on the water over there. I think where you now have a boat and time over there you will begin to nail some nice fish especially if you continue to pick the brains of knowledgable Bear Lake fishermen.

Nice fish! Question - why are some lake trout silver and others dark greenish brown? Water temp? Food sources?[unimpressed]

I'm impressed that you were catching cisco on a rod and reel -- without snagging them. Curious what you were using to catch them, and if you got many bites?

We were just catching a few with the small hook to have fun with the IFG contest. You would not want to catch you limit that way it would take forever, it took us about 5 minutes to shoot the video stream for one fish.

No specific knowledge here, but what I have heard is that the macks in Bear Lake are a different subspecies than the darker ones you see from, say, the Gorge. I do know that fish have some ability to alter their color to their environment and the depths of Bear Lake are somewhat milky. If anyone knows more than that, by all means share it.

Hey Kent, I did this same thing about 3 years ago when the lake froze the last time. I was in the same area and didn't have a net so I tried a gold Swedish Pimple (silver didn't attract as well) and a maggot (spike) on a 3" dropper and it worked really well. I got 20 cisco and many whitefish in about an hour by fishing in about 4-5' of water. Several years ago I fished later in the day about 9:00 a.m. when the fish had moved out a bit and weren't spawning as feverishly; the year class was much bigger, most of my fish were 10-11 inches; and the schools were smaller. This time I could only entice cisco to look at the bait when few fish (10-15) were present and the cisco averaged only about 7" and a maggot is a large mouthful. However they did hit it fairly aggressively.

I'm not so sure that one couldn't catch a few for bait in the summer time using this method but deeper of course similar to fishing for perch.
