Are You Breeding Rust Bunnies?
#1
<" }}^ >< Ice Fishing Tip #41

Tip credited to ssor Thank you [Smile]

Are you breeding rust bunnies? Although this is not a popular practice, it is a common one.

For those who can afford such extravagances all is good and well.
For many of us much of our ice fishing gear is converted to the summer sport. While for others a different stile of fishing is targeted all together.

This puts our tools (toys) in jeopardy of “Rust Bunnies Infestation”. Though dust bunnies are an unsightly annoyance and can be easily shooed away, rust bunnies will do irreparable damage to your lures poles reels and the boxes you keep them in.

Un like our summer gear that you just throw back in the box after each use will dry off before you get your next lure attached on a dry day. Ice fishing lures will take the water home in the form of ice:
· Thus allowing the minerals in the water to have longer contact to the pores of your gear.
· Thus causing rust on your hooks in your box
· Thus prematurely oxidizing your aluminum on your reels
· Thus working its way under the paint or film covering causing flakes and pealing on the surface of your lures.
· Thus causing rust stains in your box that will repopulate the rust bunnies on the next new lure you throw in the box.

The remedies are simple; just find a safe dry place, free of wandering pets and children in the house or where ever to allow every thing to dry before the rust bunnies find it. Then it will be safe to put away till the next trip.

Putting your gear away for the next season you may want to consider doing a little open housing cleaning. Meaning open up the housing of your reels pull out the old lube put in the new, wipe out any dirt and grime with a light oily rag. This will stop the infestation of rust bunnies causing oxidation of your reels from the inside.

Remember your fishing gear is just like a good gun. It is your best buddy and can last a lifetime with the proper care, and can save your life in times of famine.

http://myweb.ecomplanet.com/MESS6438/
Lookie See what the kids are up to.
Dave T.
