Silver Lake Flat
#1
We were able to stock roughly 29,500 6-8 inch arctic grayling into Silver Lake Flat this week. If you have never caught a grayling this will be a fun place to catch one. Even though they are small they can be a lot of fun fishing with a fly, especially toward evening. We also put in some Bonneville cutthroat trout and there is also catchable rainbow trout. It is going to be a fun place to fly fish for the next few years.

I've seen past reports of stocked grayling in there, but have never seen or heard of any pulled out. I'd love to catch one and enjoy that hike. Thanks for the tip! Maybe I'll head up soon.

If it's Silver Lake Flat Reservoir you don't have to hike (unless you want to). You can drive the three-mile dirt road to it.

Good point. I was of course thinking of the higher Silver Lake. I've seen reports of grayling being stocked up there, but I guess I hadn't thought about them being stocked in Silver Lake Flat Reservoir.

With the pressure that little lake gets I imagine it will be great fly fishing for the rest of this summer. Glad to see some other species being planted. Good effort but with people being able to drive right to the lake and the fall draw down I dont expect the variety to last long. Maybe it deserves some special regulations.

FWIW, we took some scouts up to Silver lake (the one you hike to) a year ago and we did catch a number of grayling in there, along with the brookies. They should be even bigger now.

I've never been to Silver Lake but some folks I know said the place reminds them of the High Uintas so it must be beautiful.

The DWR, using habitat funds, stabilized the dam, plugged the drain, and created an overflow so the water level can be maintained all year. The project was completed around 2013. Prior to that, each year it was stocked and each year the fish that weren't caught would be lost because of the low water level.

Yeah, it's pretty neat up there. My previous visit was many years ago, when I was a youth. We did catch multiple age classes of brookies and the older/bigger brookies were starting to put on some weight. All the grayling our group caught were small.

Thanks for the report. It sounds like the project worked if the fish are carrying over.

I may have to plan a trip up there before I get too old to make the hike.[Wink]
