Hey Fellow Fishing Freaks ...
When did you first realize that you were addicted to fishing?
I'll Go First...
I was about 8 Years old and my father took me fishing at a place called Sutter By Pass. This place was full of monster Largemouth and other neat fish. I remember watching a monster bass take a baby duck off the surface of the water without a sound. It was then I knew that fishing was for me.
Okay, Now You!

I first started fishing when I was very young, we had a large family with very limited funds so we would go camping and fishing as family outings. I was raised on a ranch in Colorado and we would camp near Mammoth lake. We mostly stream fished. I had lost interest in fishing for alot of years. Then I got a son-in-law that got my interest going again. I now fish at least one day a week. It is my sanity or insanity as my husband says.

I think my parents handed me a fishing rod rather than a pacifier. I can't remember being too young to fish. Having this board has only increased my addiction because I realize how many new places I want to fish, new species I want to catch, new methods I want to try, and how many great people on here I have fished with and others that I want to meet and fish with in the future.

I also have been addicted since I was very young. My parents realized this earlier than I did. When I was really young I still sucked my thumb, my parents tried everyting they could to get me to stop. Finally out of desperation they offered to buy me a new fishing pole if I stopped sucking my thumb. That's all it took.
When I was 14 they used this tactic again. I was fishing nearly every day after school and every weekend and they wanted me to be more responsible so they grounded me from fishing until I found a job. I found one the next day.
I now try to get out fishing at least once a week and if I can't get out I have the times of the fishing shows memorized and on what channels they appear so that I can plan everything else around them.
Yeah I'm a fanatic.

It all started for me when my dad would take me to the Uintas when I was very young. I was so young and small that I got cold really easy and at first could not even cast out my own line. Back then the limit was 14 trout and a child could catch half of a full limit. I would be so bummed if we had to leave before we had all 21 fish in the creel. The night before a fishing trip I was so excited that I could not sleep. It was worse than Christmas Eve. We would always leave around 3:30 or 4:00am so that we could be at the lake before the sun rose, even after hiking in a ways. It was so cool to be in the woods in the dark like that. It was a little scary but I trusted my dad. And back then the scent of the pines trees was very intense to me. The whole experience was perfect. I just could not get enough.
I always loved fishing. To this day people tease me because where ever we went, and I saw even the smallest stream or pond, I would always ask my dad, "Dad, do you think there are any fish in there?" Fishing is all that I thought about. It has been 30 years since then but my family still laughs about it when we are out somewhere together.
In high school when I had my own car I was a fishing maniac. And I liked to hike to remote lakes and fish in solitude, except for my buddies. Yep, I was addicted but lately I don't have as much time.

[cool]Hey, UTBASS, I'll bet I'm one of the few guys (besides Road) who knows where Sutter Bypass is. I lived in Sacramento for several years, and had many good trips on that underfished waterway. Big bass, crappies and cats.
I got started a long time before, as a kid in Idaho. There was a small creek (Willow Creek) that wandered through the outskirts of town less than a block from our home. I learned to float 'hoppers under the culverts to snooker lots of big rainbows during the summer. Caught some bigguns and lost enough to keep me in fishing stories for the rest of my life.
I still occasionally have dreams of being back on that creek, with my old steel telescope pole. But, you can never go back. It has been dammed, channeled and covered over for many years now. No more kids will become hooked on fishing by Willow Creek.

I believe it is Fenwick that runs an add stating "Fishing is only an addiction if you are trying to quit."

I was too young to remember my first fishing trip but I must have been hooked. I was raised on the banks of the Bear River in Cache Valley and would spend nearly all day every day during the summer months on the river fishing for what ever would bite. Mostly in those days it was carp and mud cats or yellow belly or bull heads (what ever you want to call them) catfish.
I, however, had a huge love for trout fishing and would love to fish the Little Bear River (where Porcupine Res. now is) with my dad and grandpa. The best time of the year was always in Aug. when the grasshoppers were out. After Porcupine was built, my dad and I fished it when ever we could get a break from the farming.
I have taught my sons to fish and they love to go.
Big fish tackle has become almost as big of addiction as fishing. I love the site and the message boards.
Thanks all for your input to a great site.

I was about 3 and half to 4 years old when my dad used to take me to work with him and we would take a "lunch break" to go fishing,
Jed Burton
p.s. although I got an early start on my addiction I spent a few years as a weekend or few and far between until last year when my addiction came back full force and I am finally addicted beyond my control.

The funny thing is I didn't even like fishing when I was young. I was much more into playing sports and stuff of that nature. fishing when I was young was throwing out your line and just letting it sit waiting for a fish to bite. That was boring to me, I had way to much energy to just sit and wait for a bite.
I started liking fishing after I saw a bass fishing show on cable when I was young and this looked like something new and exciting. I tried out this new fishing, and had a lot of fun, right then I was hooked. I liked that this kind of fishing was quick and exciting. I realized that to catch fish it took enticing a fish to bite and not just getting lucky. I also learned that the more you learn and experiment the more fish you will catch. A lot of people don't give fishing a long enough chance to really like it. They don't realize that fishing is more than just dunking a bait in the water and waiting for a bite. It takes knowledge and skill and experience.

Hey Matador, I used to do the same thing!!! When I was young I always used to ask my dad, "Hey Dad, are there fish in there?" at any pond, canal, stream, lake, or gutter no matter how small! In fact, to this day I still wonder when I see a new tiny stream or canal, if any fish live there, escapees from some nearby stream or lake.
I've been fishing since before I can remember. My first memories come from when I was around 4 years old. I plan to do the same with my kids. I just found out today that the baby my wife and I are expecting is a boy! Going to start him fishing when he's about a year and a half old!!!

Congrats on the baby boy cat man. My granson could tie on a hook before he could tie his shoes. Unfortunately my son got a later start he was about 6 when I got back into fishing. But it is something we enjoy doing together.

I have always enjoyed fishing but I come from a family that wasn't into it much so I was pretty much on my own to learn and fish. Now I am hopelessly addicted, thanks in part to the message board because I can't seem to leave it alone and listening to everyone talk about fishing gets me all excited.
I have a two year old little boy that is already addicted. He loves to reel in a fish and play in the water when we go. I got tired of him trashing my good ice fishing reels so I bought a cheap ice rod and let him have at it. The other day I tied a piece of yarn to it and glued a magnet on the end. I then cut some fish shapes out of paper and put magnets on them. He loves it but doesn't understand yet that when you swing the pole the line and magnet on it moves and becomes dangerout to mom and dad.
I have told myself that I would let my son get into whatever hobbies he wants as long as they are good ones. I don't think I will have to do much prodding to keep him excited at fishing. I am just excited for when he gets a little bit older I can take him to the Uintas or other places and this just gives me another excuse to give to the boss to go fishing.
