Soldier Creek DAV Pre-Fish 7-23-16
#1
I did a pre-fish of Soldier Creek yesterday with Kory. Up until about noon I was a little concerned about being able to find the fish on the 30th. There was no need for alarm. After returning to my long-time honey hole, and moving out to 40 - 45' of water, it was fish on.

After doing a planned board replacement on the boat trailer, in the parking lot, I decided to try another location in the mid-afternoon. Glad that I did. It was fast and furious catching at that location, again in water around 45' deep.

I caught one fish on a night crawler that I drop-shotted and all other fish were caught on tube jigs tipped with cut-chub minnows. Kory caught them on cut-chub minnows and also on crawdad tails, that he caught while we were fishing on a minnow rigged with a sinker and cheese cloth.

Along with all of the cutts, we caught around 10 rainbows, I ended up going through three bags (total of nine minnows) of frozen chubs.

Another enjoyable outing with Kory and looking forward to getting a DAV into some fish.

Good to hear you got into 'em again!
I've been trying to find chub minnows for some time but nobody seems to have them anymore. Do you know where they're available to buy?

I know they're not as good as the blue eyed left handed ones, but the carp minnows are getting just about right sized now if you do a little work with a casting net. I don't remember where you're from, but if you're going to be in Cache Valley I'll take you out to catch a few. Can't guarantee a catch, but most times I can find several dozen. They aren't swarming this time of year so you have to go for two or three per cast of the net. It's slow, but kind of fun too. Let me know if you're interested. Later J

I sure appreciate that offer, but I live in Utah County so that would be a long drive for some carp! I need to buy and learn to use a cast net at Utah Lake (4 mile drive), just haven't done it yet. For now I have some frozen chubs from Scofield ice fishing.

What would be a good size net for a beginner?

Get the smaller size, I think it's a 4' radius so it opens to 8' diameter or a 5' radius with a 10' diameter, but if you can get the 1/4" grid. Most are 3/8" but the smaller minnows get through that size. Good luck. J

Good to hear that you got into them again. It sounds like with the hot weather, they have gone deep. I wish I could get out of the heat like that. Lucky fish.

I still have never seen jig fishing as hot as what you describe - someday I will.

Thanks for the post

Too bad we couldn't find them when I took you out. At one point, I caught at least 10 in a row (several doubles on my two rods) as quickly as I could get the jig to the bottom.
