FYI, Utah State Parks just started a new program for disabled vets! It sounds like its pretty similar to the annual pass a lot of us buy every year, but is free to veterans with a disability rating of 50% or more.
Just thought I'd throw that out there for anyone who qualifies but doesn't know....

Yeah, I have had the National Parks Pass for years, but I thought this is the first state pass they have offered for DAV. I have been buying the regular price annual pass for the last 3 years, did they already have a state pass for vets?

Yes, it was called the "Utah State Parks Special Fun Tag", I still have mine from before they changed a bunch of stuff. I use my Access Pass a lot more than the state one but is still nice to have.

Oh yeah, I did hear about that pass, thanks for reminding me. The problem was that I didn't qualify for it because the regulation said you had to be blind or in a wheel chair or something like that to qualify. Maybe it was different years ago, I've only been here for 3...
This new program just goes off your VA rating which, my guess is, that it will include a lot more vets!

Yes, the new pass has fewer restrictions on who can qualify for it, but I wonder why they require you to renew it every year? Might be due to changes in their condition that may affect their rating schedule. I like the fact that the Fun Tags never expire, but they also required the person possessing it to have a permanent disabling condition.

[#800000]I've had my Utah 'Fun Tag' and Federal Access card since the 1980's. Back then, Utah only required that you had a disability rating from the VA (mine was 20% at that time). Utah changed the requirement to read you had to have 50% or more sometime in the 1990's but grandfathered those that already had one. Then, in the late 2000's the state did away with the tag altogether, but again grandfathered those that had one so they could still use it. But if we lost it, it would not be replaced. The state has now come back to their senses and reinstated a very worthwhile program that honors Veterans as they should be honored. I would encourage ANY Veteran who qualifies for this honor to take advantage of it immediately. I still use my original Fun Tag on a regular basis at many state parks for free day use and boat launching.[/#800000]

[/#800000]
[#800000]And just a reminder, the old Utah tag and the new Utah tag do NOT work at Federal recreation areas such as Pineview, Strawberry, and Flaming Gorge. And the Federal Pass doesn't work for day use/boat launch at those Federal facilities that are run by a concessionaire (American Land & Leisure). But it will get you a 50% discount on overnight camping which also includes use of the boat launch but does not discount the charge for an electrical hookup.[/#800000]
[#800000]
[/#800000]
[#800000]Example: Strawberry charges $20 for a Loop C (non-electrical) campsite and the Access Pass will get you in for $10. They charge you $31 for a Loop B (electrical hookups) campsite so the electrical hookup is $11 more. With the Access Pass you can book there for $21 (half the $20 camping fee plus $11 for the electricity hookup). Flaming Gorge works the same way. I don't think Pineview has any hookup sites but don't know for sure as I've never camped there.[/#800000]
[#800000]
[/#800000]
[#800000]Bottom line is this; if you qualify for either of these passes, get them. They're free and will save you money at both State and Federal facilities around this great state of ours and at almost all Federal facilities nation wide.[/#800000]
