Hyrum 12-31-16
#1
Hit Hyrum today. The bite was a little slow but I managed to ice 8 trout and 4 perch.

One of the rainbows I caught looks a lot different than the others. In fact if I didn't know better I would say it is a Kokanee. It had no spots on it and had a blueish titnt to it. It's the top one in the pics. What do you think? The meat is really orange compared to the others I caught. I know Hyrum is downstream from porcupine. Any chance it is a Kokanee?

Rainbow coloration can vary a lot. I would say rainbow. Kokanee meat is usually more of a pink and it should smell like salmon as well.

I agree with Devin, Bow, a koke would have a deeper fork in the tail. Nice haul on the fish, how long was your biggest perch?

The largest perch was only about 6". These will be cut up into future bait. Ice was about 8 inches thick. 4 inches of bad ice sitting on 4 inches of clear ice.

I was hoping they were getting bigger by now, not sure I've ever caught one there bigger than 7 or 8 "[Sad].

Thanks for report. I may head up there some time next week. Wish the perch were bigger. Is there bass and bluegill in that pond? I've never fished it.
