Hawaii board is dead so thought I would ask for suggestions here.
I just arrived in Kona, Hawaii and am looking for any shore fishing tips. I do have a rod and reel here, so just looking for some good places to fish and techniques to use. I have little to no salt water fishing experience.

Head North via HI19 about 1hr to a town called Kawaihae. There you will find shallow rocky beaches and points along the coastline. Growing up we used 7 to 9 foot fast action rods with 8 to 10lb line. Used casting bubbles trailed by 24 to 36 inch leader. No. 12 hooks tipped with black curly tailed jigs.
Around Kona the waters are pretty deep. You could try black surface poppers with 15 to 20lb main line. I used to fish the shoreline north of the Old Airport. Then there is also calling the local fishing supply places. I believe S. Tokunaga fishing supply is still open. It in Hilo opposite side of the island but they can help you out.
Hope that helps. It's been 20 years since I've moved away so things may have changed a little.
