Lake Mead Friday Night
#1
Friday, 01/09/09-Wanted to take the boat out Friday night and fish the trout plant sites. When my bud Chuck showed up at the house the wind was blowing pretty strong. We decided to leave the boat at home and fish from the shore. I tossed the 9' surf pole in the truck and off we went. Arrived at Hemenway fishing dock at about 8:00pm.

Cold, windy, and dark. We had the place to ourselves. The dock was wet, slippery, and bucking like a Saddle bronc. No way we could make presentations that would trigger fish. Of course we would try anyway.

Chuck on the dock. Notice how wet the deck is. About every fourth wave would break over it. Hard to tell from the picture, but the dock was rocking and rolling. Put up with this nonsense for awhile then headed for Boulder Harbor.

One little boat trolling around the calm waters of the cove, two guys fishing from the fishing dock. This was more like it. Grabbed the pole and headed to the shoreline, full moon making a light unnecessary. Worked the area to the right of the dock, casting about a million times. Nothing. Marched pass the launch ramp and worked the shoreline all the way to the point, casting about a million times. Nothing. Gave up at about 11:00pm.

The lures. A ton of effort tonight and all I got was a sore shoulder!

Sounds nasty! Is that ice on the pier?

Tossin' big swimbaits all night really makes you appreciate trolling, huh! [Wink]

Hello BaySport,

I know the feeling. i go down to the beach quite often to cast. i take two poles. One big spinning rod and stick a 7foot bait caster with a smaller lure on it. once the body starts to hurt i cast the smaller one for a while. sometimes the smaller bait is what they are looking for.

We should make an exercise video. Then you could start and be in shape before big fish season arrives! It seems to be all or nothing down there!

Looks like ice but it is dry deck. The picture does not really show how rough it was. Wind was blowing in the direction of the beach, waves breaking along the shore.

I was hoping for a calm night so I could walk along the beach and really work the area. What I got was wind and waves! Boulder Cove was better.

It was fun casting the long surf pole. You can really get the lure out there but after about twenty casts it kicks your butt. It was designed to cast into surf and be put into a pole holder!

Rough night out there! Looks like you are doing all the right things to lock into a big one. Keep it up and I am sure your time will come.
