I won't even pretend to know the answers to this as I know very little about cats (though I would love to go catch a big one sometime).
However, I do know that I have seen a couple of petstores selling what they advertise as "blue channel cats" as aquarium fish! Look like a channel cat to me, with as little as I know.
I know you are going to say they get way too big for aquariums, but most fish will only grow to the space available, and will stunt their growth.
Anyway, if there are blues in Utah Lake, the Jordan River, or anything like that, this could be a good explanation of where they might have come from.
