Flygodess, I am a bit curious why you, TKB, and others are unhappy with some of us for talking about fish handling and then you guys finish your own posts by talking about the best ways to handle fish? I respect you and your husband VERY much and hope I am not out of line by asking you to clarify? No disrespect intended.
SCOTTY P. I am not sure what you are asking here.
My feelings are, there is a lot of mishandling fish out there. The best we can do is to try to educate. The fact the fish swims off is not a sure fire sign it is okay. It can swim off and die.
I haven't fished from a regular boat for years, but I see pictures that this is were most of the Gill Gaffing happens. Maybe the idea that they have to reach over the boat to get the fish.
I am saying however, far be it from me to cast the first stone, cause I know at some time I probably have done it.
It appears to me, that people that fish rivers seem to understand C&R and good tactics for this much more than stillwater. I know when I fish the Provo and I see fish floating belly up or hardly moving with their skin coming off because of stress and poor handling.
It is really simple.....wet your hands, cradle the fish with one hand(staying away from the gill plates) and maybe holding tail with other. And be sure not to keep it out of the water too long (by this I am talking seconds)
Besides, they make much better pictures from the water LOL
