im also a self learner and still learning i have been flyfishing now for almost 3 yrs and i still have to ask other flyfishers what to use when im fishing if u get a chance go to the weber and use a #18 copper john or zebra i did last week and landed 3 nice ones (15,17,16) within 3 hrs i lost 3 others but keep tring i fished the provo a couple of times and only had 1 good trip there but good luck if u have any ? just post it on here we all will help
