Tapered leaders help the fly turn over nice. A must when dry fly fishing, but presentation is not an issue when using a sinking line.
I will add straight mono/fluoro but I do play with length to get in the zones.
4' to 6' on the bigger flies and 3' to 4' on the smaller ("Y" connection)
I will use a taper leader on rivers but only because I am switching from dry to nymph. And then I use a furled leader.
Check out Kelly Galloup's video...he talkes about not needing tapered leaders also on streamers.
