Your 5wt should be just fine for bass up to 14-16 inch.
Just make sure that he does not get into some weeds
and such.
I have cought nice size SMB and LMB on my Sage 3wt
as well without any big problems.
Now, if you get lets say a 16lb bass on 5wt, well good

Problem with the 5wt. isn't so much the fish, mostly the big flies I'd like to throw and the nasty places I'd have to throw them.
