If your plan is to stay in Southern Utah and you don't mind fishing for Bass, then Sand Hallow or Quail Creek are where you want to fish, they are close to St George. If you plan on going a little farther North, like Cedar city and you want to fish for trout, there is a road East of the town that goes up into the mountains with plenty of places to camp and fish.
I visit Calif every year, my Dad and sisters live there, so I know what you mean, I never want to live there[unimpressed][unimpressed].
So 4 years ago you said your son was 14, I guess he is 18 now? He should be all grown up by now, at least that is what mine thought, when he was that age[
