Sounds like you found some nice fish! Sorry you found/find so many 'has been Muskies'. Awful shame and a waste.
So were you shore fishing, or floating?
I can now say I've caught them on light tackle - hooked up when targeting perch, AND on my heavy rod with tougher line. Definitely better with the right gear - drag set well so they can run if they need to, but enough backbone to bring them in when ready. But they don't have to get over-exhausted running and running w/o ever being able to lock in the drag and hold them at the boat.
Now if they'd just stop snagging my little perch-spinners!
Personally - I'd hate to see Newton go bait-free. Those perch and bass like worms too much! They could probably do more to check folks for using whole perch, or pieces too big. Plus I just don't see it happening.
Saw they planted some new TM at Pineview. Pretty small to start. Wonder if they'll put any in Newton?
