Here is my question, whether it is legal or not (clearly illegal in my mind).
Why do we tie flies to match the hatch? Or throw perch colored lures in a lake where perch is the main forage base?
Why do we try to make our presentation as real as possible?
Because if you can mimic something the fish is eating, you'll have a WAY better chance of catching them. Fish eat all sorts of things, from tiny insects, to shiner minnows, to whole bluegills. They eat anything and just about everything in their underwater environment.
HOW IN THE HECK does putting WD-40 on your presentation make it more natural? How does it mimic something fish are eating? IT DOESN'T. It is just common sense folks! There is no reason to put it on your lures.
This topic came up awhile back and a lot of people seem to defend the use of WD-40 without any solid reasoning. They don't have any data to back it up, they just "believe" it helps them catch fish. Give me a break. So what you are basically saying is that it is your 'lucky' scent. Good grief.
Squirt a few dabs in your fish tank if you think the stuff is harmless to fish. If you want to pollute our waters with this junk then go ahead and do it to yours too.
I think the thing is a lot of you (WD-40ers) just need to learn how to fish. I think that is where this problem stems from. People who are great fisherman know better than to put WD-40 on their lures. You don't even need scent of any kind if you are good at keeping your hands clean from foul odors (oil/gasoline/etc). I fish with people who spend more time worried about putting scent on after every few casts... while I catch fish after fish without it. You don't need power-bait or WD-40 to catch fish - give it up!
