I will be teaching a class in Idaho Falls Fly Tying Expo on the Friday of the show.
The old timers really don't troll. They anchor down and cast, wait, then strip.
I suggest no less than a 6 wt. If casting and stripping a 9' to 10' is great for distance.
If you are casting and trolling, a 7' rod will work.
I recommend a 9' or 9'6" for an all purpose rod.
Line, TYPE III or IV "WET CELL". Reason? Wet Cell forms a belly which is better for weedy bottoms.
Leader: do not need a tapered leader, you are fishing a sinking line. Length however will matter. Try to stay at around 6' max. Reason? Longer leaders will sink at a different rate than your line forming a belly in the leader resulting in missed strikes.
I am sure everyone has there own style, but I am telling you some basic proven facts. And actually simplifying a bunch of stuff.
Now flies....that is another subject.
