Echo Columbus Day

It was my daughter-in-law's birthday today and she wanted to go fishing. So we met her and my son at Echo and trolled around for a while this morning.  We ended up keeping 3 limits of very healthy bows.

We lost several nice ones along the way, caught our fair share planters, and a very hefty 20" bow to top it off. 

We fished 6 rods, 2 rods stacked on each downrigger, and a surface rod on each side with a Rapala or a flicker shad. Deepest rods were set at 20 ft, and all 6 rods had action, with the mid depth stacked rods catching the most. We had a great time.

What tackle where you using?

Dodgers and squid and or Apex lures behind the dodger. Apex in all different colors worked the best and caught the most fish. Tipped everything with a piece of crawler or a piece of chub. (Chub worked better).

Great report and awesome pics. Echo has treated us all well this Fall and the average size of those bows are hard to beat. Can't say I've ever heard of using chub meat on a faster trolled lure, I would think a chunk of chub would throw off the lures action but I guess it depends on the lure. Since apex lures have the hooks behind the lure and squids get all their action from the dodger, I'm guessing that is why they worked so well for you. Had you ever used chub like that before or was that your first time using it? Great idea!

Yes I have tipped with chub or sucker for the last few years when trolling for trout with koke gear. Cutting thin pieces of chub with the skin on, then hooking through the skin near the top edge of the piece actually doesn't affect the action that much. I do this late in the year at Lost Creek, East Canyon and Echo. Usually I start out experimenting with tipping 1/2 of the lures with a crawler, and 1/2 with chub to see what they want.  More often than not, I end up with chub on all of the lines. This happened on Monday. I also tip with chub ice fishing for trout at these locations.

Interesting, so I guess you cut the chub up, in thin strips, while it's frozen or mostly still frozen? Will give that a try, the next time I get out and troll for the trout. We have been using chub for bait, while ice fishing, for a number of years, it works well.

That's right. I cut it when still frozen, or mostly frozen.  It also is more durable than crawler pieces and usually do not have to re-bait as often.

That's another reason why we like chub meat so much, it stays on the hook better than most baits, and they are easier to catch than fish like suckers, at least for me.
