Anyone had any luck ?
#1
Well I know Dave and I aren't the only guys in the state fishing , are we ?
I meen you don't have to give your location out or anything , just post your catch or something .
got a mess of gills yesterday , or had my lure slammed by a big northern .
finally got that ol' big bass !
Well anyway , I hope you had a blast catching something .
I've been tring for a muskey down at the dam , no luck yet .
That big northern is showing his head up near the boat , maybe a slower retrive will help , that or a sucker on a bobber near the boat when I'm spinner fishing for him .
No mountable bass yet , still hoping .
Lots & lots of crappies , every trip !

I was thinking about going,

but I have been working on building a portable deer blind for a sinior who isnt able to take the cold or walk the trails any more....

I will take pictures when it is done.

he will be able to drive it down the road park it in a feild on privet property.

It will be some what like the deer huts upnorth seen on fire trails, except thay wont be up on a tower or in a tree fortress.

I will have to figure out what will be the best heat sorce for it. I am thinking about a coleman globe style heater. something that will run on white gas but not to high on the btu's..

Isn't that the same thing you use on the ice sled ?

I dont use a sled yet, nor a heater...

not yet any way....

this shack is semi protable in that it will ride on a trailer but never come off the trailer.

here are the first two pics...

the heaters I have are of the propane type.

the colman type I am thinking of is like a giant globe wic. tho I havent seen one is some time.

the propane one puts out to many btu's and lots of noise... since it is not winter in november here any more, all we need is something to break the chill with out setting the place on fire..

`Yea, I know it very well . I have one that I use too.
Found it at the flea market on middlebelt road , south of metro airport in brownstown .
I think I picked it up for a couple bucks or less .
I tried to look at the slideshow of the blind but the system must be getting some high traffic , I'll try later .
Is it bolt together or on a hinge & pin to assemble ?

there are only two pictures so far, it will be at least a week before I post any thing new about it, I oopsed and took my top plates out with the wall.

my plans are to perminantly mount it to the snow mobile trailer.

but you can make it so that it comes back apart and throw it in the back of a full size pickup if you wanted.

the walls and roof assemble with 3 inch 16d deck screws. if you stop right there you can disasemble it by pulling just a few screws with your cordless drill.

you will have 6 peices total.

to stand it you will just need a peice of ground not in a hole so you dont get flooded when it rains. Ya, you can hunt all day in the rain with this baby !...[cool]

to assemble the walls you will need 4 deck screws per joint (20) two going in one way and two going in the other side of the joint studs and the roof will get screwed from the bottom up and will requier 10 3 inch deck screws.

the roof will go on like a cap.

use a primium ourdoor wood preservitive like bear and your girls will be able to put their boys in there for thier hunts...

any other questions just ask....

I was looking at last years deer season rules, and bouy did they put the twist to the rules...

the rules read,

you are allowed two licenses only, either one combo license or one gun and one bow license.

you are allowed only two deer total, not counting antlerless tags. one taken in gun season and the other in one of the other seasons covered under the combo license including bow and black powder.

you are allowed only one deer per season, and one has to be a 4 point or better on one side and the other can be a spike. the twist is you can take the 4 point in either season, dosnt matter wich comes first, the chicken or the egg.

then they threw in yet one more twist that I would have never in my life gussed on this one, it reads

if you have an antlerless tag and a buck tag and you have not filled either of them at the time you shoot a button buck "deer with antlers less than three inches" you can tag that button buck with your buck tag leaving you with another antlerless tag for the season.... "you must have both the buck tag and the antlerless tag on you at the time you tag the button....

bouy am I looking forward to this years rule changes [pirate]

dose dad have the acrage to put in for privet antlerless permits?

Nope , just 10 achers , used to be that was enough .
40 achers , I thought that kind of land already entitled you to block permits , it has me scratching my head along with the new regulations .

Ya, I had some bad luck... LOL

I took the hunting shack 50 miles in the wrong direction... I took the walls and the roof parts to lansing farm when I was suspost to have taken them to the Harsons Island Farm.... so that shot my whole day yesterday moving the walls half way across the state... LOL

on the up side I was able to bring the roof boards home so I could work on the cealing of the hunting shack.

so today I did just that, I spent my whole day working on it, and no I did not get it finished, I was trying to enjoy the day while doing this... Thats all part of the hunt dont ya know...[Wink]

so here is my progress so far....

this shows how to assemble the five sided roof. unexpected bonus, I was sitting in my chair in the roof perimiter and I noticed there is enough room to do some hefty ice fishing. the roof is not complete yet as you can see, I still have a few more peices to place on the roof before I can finish it, I ran in to a stand still when I ran out of liquid nail. note every thing is screw, nailed, glued and strapped together to make sure there will be no comming apart while crusing down the road...
when you click on the photos to blow them up you can click on them to blow them bigger still again so you can see all the details of what I have done with the roof parts....

I finished workin on the roof, well the construction part any ways, I still have to put on the trim, and the roll roffing but I wont do that untill it is mounted on top of the shack...

if you remember I said I was building it with out buying any thing, well take a look at this roof with the plywood attached, every thing on the shack is from used lumber...

to mount this on top of a boat trailer may require a little extra metal frame work on your part.

I built this 7 feet tall, and notice it towers over top of my truck. I think 6 foot would be sufficent and still give you room to stand up and walk around, and to tell the truth people who stand our height 5 foot is enough if you dont mind not standing for some time.

those office chairs are realy nice as long as you stay away from the vinal ones. they are quiet and gives you the oppertunity to shoot out of any window.

you will deffenantly want to park this in the shade. I was working on it yesterday out in the sun and I could only get in it for 15 minuts at a time. 95 degrees and baking sun inside of a black box makes for a deadly combination.

here is the next set of photos.

I have begun assembly of the shack.

today I set up the walls, mounted the roof and hung the door along with calking all the seams.

there is something I should mention, that roof weighs as much as a deer, but if your old boat trailer has a wench your in luck because you can use that to lift the roof if you park the shack under a good branch. or if you can barrow a buck pole you can lift the roof then back the shack under it.

You could build the roof right on top of your shack, I didnt have that option.

what I am saying is if you have a way to lift the roof, it is eaiser to to build it on the ground and lift it in to place, I am not a big fan of working on ladders...

two six foot people can lift it and slide it on top of the 7 foot shack. I could reach the top but it was well out of my range for putting the roof on. It is a bit of a strech for guys our size so I think you may want to go for a six foot shack. If I make another one, I wont go any taller than 6 foot.. I got lots of head room, I got room to do jumping jacks in side this shack...

I did put the roof on by my self, I first rolled it in to the back of my truck, drove it out and then lifted and slid it in to the back of the cargo truck, then I grabed the trailer and backed it up to the cargo truck and lifted one side on top of the roof and went to the front of the cargo truck and entered the back through the door between the seats then lifted the back side of the roof and slid it in to place.

I then went in side and turned the roof to expose the corners and removed those corner braces I had put in place and then lined up the roof from the inside.

starting in the back over the door I used 3 in deck screws and ancored the roof. once I had the roof ancored I pulled the straps down and used roofing nails, two on the side and one on the bottom. I will get another picture of the strap if that isnt clear.

like I mentioned I had not acored the shack to the trailer, well I had nails and other things in the back of the shack and when I took the trailer loose from the truck the tong pointed in the air. the shack is mounted well over the axle with just enough weight to keep preasure on the tong. so it is important if you store any thing in the trailer you keep it to the front. Any way the shack slid back 4 inches. I will have to push that back to the bow of the trailer.

I will be using two ancor on each wall, If I were planning on taking it down the road any time soon I would put at least 4 ancors on each wall. I am glad I had not calked around the floor yet,

lacking the proper tools to do the job, I again made do with what I had,

to set in the hinges and door latch catch I used my circular saw to cut in the depth, I still have a little paint left to do the touch ups. [Image: DSCN0510.JPG] like I said the whole shack can be built in a day or two. I put the roofing on using roll roofing and plastic cement along with roofing nails making sure to plastic coat over the nails. the windows are done and laying to the way side with the glue drying. I used a piece of lath board to glue across the top of the plexiglass for a handle to grab the window. I wanted to drill and put in studs though the wood and glass but was not allowed the time to do it. I will have to make another trip out and sneek them in. the studs I am speaking of is roofing nails. drill a hole and push the nail in to the hole filled with liquid nail. this way you know the lath board will never come off. especialy if you put the head side on the glass side, you will have to cut off the nail shank from the wood side and file it down, so if you use aluminum roofing nails that job will be a snap. Yes there are more photos to come....

this is the lay out of the roofing. looking at pic four, you can see three strips, I put on the ou side strips first then cut the third strip in half and layed it back I cut the center of the front strip up to the point where it would cross the center board and overlapped the the end peices. doing this allowed me to lay the roofing flat. the back center strip only come up to the center.
[Image: DSCN0593.JPG] [Image: DSCN0598.JPG] [Image: DSCN0599.JPG] [Image: DSCN0600.JPG]

I used old vinal to trim the corners and facia trim. I had forgotten to take my roofin nails so I ended up using button screws. "thats what I had. and you know I could not leave those white flags standing so I used the last of my paint to cover all the white. I had enough to paint the cut edges of the window and put a second coat on the out side of the door.
[Image: DSCN0601.JPG] [Image: DSCN0602.JPG]

this is the finish product
[Image: DSCN0603.JPG]

to keep this shack from flying off the tralor I used 3 1/2 inch lag bolts with fender washers one on each side of the corners and one in the center of each wall.
[Image: DSCN0605.JPG] [Image: DSCN0604.JPG]

here is what I looked like going down the road

the sun had just set when I took these shots, I had to lighten them up a lot in order for you to be able to see the shack. in pic number three you can see that the shack disipears in to the skyline during twilight hours. the color looks black, it is actualy a realy dark green. when the leaves fall and all it left but bark this shack will be almost invisible. I guess

I forgot to take a pic of the window from the inside. I will try to remember to do that the next time I am on the island. I still have to find a rug for the inside and go back out with a jack and level the shack.

Good to hear from ya
glad to hear the fish are treating you well...

I have been working on a hunting shack as you can see, here is my report from last weekend.

========================

I owed you a few pics, window pics to be more percise, so here they are.

well, it is set up on harsens island. It was a riot taking it on the fairy, every one kept asking me what it was, I replied it was a pigeon coup.. LOL

pulled up between a rose bush and an oak tree sapling near a ground hog hole in a hay feild next to a few over grown oak and christmas trees.

and yes it is on privet property. I want to make that vary clear, in michigan it is not leagle to set out hunting structures on state land.

the farmer was only to happy to have the shack set up on top the ground hog hole.

[Image: DSCN0649.JPG] windows in place, dont let the glair fool ya, you can see out the plexiglas just fine, note I painted the top half of the shack a dark chocolate. any dark color is beter than the natural color of the plywood. against the natural color any movemnt of your head can be seen from out side the shack. with the near white color it may act like a deer white flag so it is best to eliminate any white flashes. [Image: DSCN0620.JPG] [Image: DSCN0621.JPG] an unexpected perk is the cubbies I made by placeing the wall brace just below the door knob is that the windows fit right in to the slots. so insted of making something to hold the windows open I will place a little bit of something across the cubbies to hold the windows from falling out, wire or a peice of lath board any thing small but firm. [Image: DSCN0633.JPG][Image: hay.jpg] here is a a sample of what they will be looking at when the season opens. "straw" the chiar was removed and a more suitable one will be found in the next couple months. wont be long now. word of caution, this time of year areas frequented with deer may be infested with tics fleas and mites. especialy if he area has been dry for several days. Fleas drown easily, ticks dont. The month of july agust and september are the best time for hitchhikers.

spraying your pants with a quality insect repellent or wearing stiff denam geans will aid in reppeling these critters

this is impotant, you dont want to bring these critterss home especialy if you have carpetting in your house. they can be difficult to get rid of once they have been introduced to the inside of a domicile.

NO?
I had one out a couple years back , name and address on it , bolt together like yours and the D,N.R. saw it , checked it out and went on their way .
I used it for about 4 years hunting and fishing without a problem .
It was 30"x42"x45" , just big enough to sit in .
Maybe I just got lucky .
