One of my good friends was kind enough to track this down and send it to me.
This is Clifford Sackett jr's 23 1/2 inch 8 1/4 lb jordanelle catch and release state record smallmouth bass.

I'm not saying that it doens't weigh over 8lbs because I know how deceiving photos can be, but it really doesn't look as big as some of the other pics I've seen of Jordanelle smallies. Old Cliff must be a big guy.

I have to say that it sure doesn't appear to me that it's over 20" either. And it sure doesn't look like it approaches 8 lbs. Beats me. I'm always inclined to give a fellow fisherman the benefit of the doubt, but this one has me more than a little skeptical.

I agree with Tomegun... that fish looks exactly like the one I caught last summer and it was only 18 inch and 5 pound and a half. My buddy Jason caught one bigger than the one in the photo by Clif and it was definitely bigger and fatter than Clif. Something is wrong here...

I've got to agree with the concensus here. I've seen a lot of pictures that doesn't do a fish justice, but this one certainly doesn't look like an 8 pound fish. Doesn't mean that it isn't, just doesn't look that way.

I have to call Bull S#!t on that one! I have seen pics of three and four pound smallies, that make that one look like a dink! That can't be the right picture of the eight pound smallie he caught.

Now I'm not a decent bass fisherman by any stretch of the imagination, but unless Mr. Sackett is as big as Andre the Giant, the pictures of the smallies you and Tommy caught this year, were everywhere as big, if not bigger looking than that fish. Just my two cents anyways.

hmmm thats a 18 inch fish and weight is hard to guess but it cant be over 4 lbs. i see why my c and r records are beat now. by fish that dont measure up. oh well if someone wants the record that bad go for it.

This conversation took place last year and we all had decided that the fish looks small. it might be right or not but it still looks small to me. heres a pic of a 19 1/4in smallie caught 2 years ago. later chuck

That whole catch and release record thing is bogus. To qualify for a state record it needs to be weighed on a Weights and Measures authenticated scale and within a certain amount of time, correct? From threads and posts on I have read on BFT, it seems like most weights are exaggerated. "I caught an 18" rainbow at Strawberry that was 6 lbs." My "eye" scale may not be perfect but come on!! If you check the Utah catch and release record book I have seen, there are a bunch of Johnsons (like in the Mel Brooks move "Blazing Saddles") listed - I'm sure they are all related. I certainly approve of catch and release (I'm more into hook and release[]) but records for such are less than reputable to me.
