Kolob Reservoir - Sun Oct 25, 2003 ( Report )

Decided to drive to Kolob on Sunday @ 3 am, made it across the desert, went thru hurricane, found a few deer along the way . .

finally got to Kolob about 7 am m.s.t. . .

water was down about 30 feet from when i was last there in june . .

Heres some video if you've never been there!

started out with a brown wooly bugger with mylar flash and a spinning bubble filled with water and split shot . . . got 3 or 4 hits, hooked one for 5 seconds . . (he turned & spit it, a nice one) then landed a nice 16 inch rainbow . . .

high wind, froze my bu$$ off, 35 degrees + 20 mph wind in my face . . . but it warmed up as the sun came up and wthe wind actually died down . .

then got another one 5 minutes later, same wooly bugger

about an 2 hrs went by, i tried other flies, jigs, spinners, spoons, i was about ready to leave and i decided to try some natural rubber worms id had for 5 yrs, ( i call 'em that cause they're not supple, theyre hard like rubber) used 'em twice maybe bam! i got one . .. a smaller chunky one . .

then 15 minutes later another . . .

well that was it . . shut down about 9:30 am, couldnt get another hit . . .left about 11 am . .

it 's sure faster going down the mountain than going up! Got back about 12:45 pm pacific time . .

I got a GPS Unit and decided to start listing gps co-ordinates - I was fishing at:

N 37 degrees 26' 1.6"

W 113 degrees 2' 36.4"

http://www.al.rodngun.com/gps/MapLookup.asp - track gps waypoints here

8008 Feet elevation

water temperature about 48 degrees
Get there before it snows! good fishin for fat bows!

You mean to say that you can drive all the way to Kolob in an hour and 45 minutes? I thought you lived in Vegas, just how far is it to Kolob? Very nice looking rainbows, they sure have their fall colors on. WH2

Glad to hear you had a good time. With weather like that, and the last weekend of the deer hunt, you probable had the whole lake to yourself.

Let me know when your coming back up. It's been a long time since we've been fishing. Keep up the those good reports.

Those buggers haven't been so good lately. I've been using a variation of that bugger and had some good action. The trick is the same as it was during spring. I usually miss more then I hook up but atleast the action is good.

Hey Mr. Loopy, Southernman and all BFT. If your planning on making a trip to Kolob, it better be soon because the weather is going to get extremely cold. If you wait to long you'll need a snowmobile and ice fishing gear. I was thinking of making a trip Saturday or Sunday. Anybody want to go?

hedgesd-

I am thinking about heading up this Friday? What do you think? Any suggestions? How cold is it? Too cold to take a tube?

I could head up Friday afternoon. Its going to be cold and expect the usual wind.

I'm going to leave my tube at home because last time the fish were all close to shore. With the low water and cold water, the only bugs that are hatching are midges. I'd use the same technique as pre-spawn.

[#0000ff]Nice report! Like the pics! Isn't it amazing how you can throw just about everything in the box at them and nothing then try something you haven't had out for years and you hit them hard.[/#0000ff]

Sounds good. If southernman wants to go it'll have to be Saturday. Either way I'll wait and see what happens.

Anybody else want to go?

You know what? HUGE oversight on my part. Friday is Halloween. I will not be able to make it up there. But, I am thinking Saturday morning sounds good. Would that work?

I think that I will join you on Saturday if you are going. Do you want to carpool Hedgesd? What color of buggers should I tie up? And what other tackle should I bring?

I will most likely be heading up pretty early Saturday. This is the spot I normally like to fish.

Where do you guys usually fish it? I don't think I'm bringing my tube, I may just in case. But look for a guy that looks like the picture above.
