string(2360) "Went on a solo trip looking for Walleye and Perch today.
Started at 9:30’ish and used bb’s with one floating harness on one side of boat and silver blade on other side, both were adorned with half a crawler each.
Surface temp 47.7F.
I bounced, and bounced, then bounced some more.
Then I used lead head jigs to no avail.
After 3 hrs or so I switched to death rolling half a crawler between .9-1.1 mph.
Then it was game on…..
But all trout, and lots of them. Sometimes two at a time.
Did that for about 1 hr. till sick of that.
Was about 1:30 now, and planned to leave around 2:30.
Had poles all over my boat so put away all my bb’ing poles and the slow death rigs.
A slight breeze pushed me out of my 15-25’ zone as I cleaned up.
I fired up big motor to go give a distant shoreline my last hour.
I put big motor in gear and was in 51’ fow about to lay the hammer down when I caught a Perchy looking school on the fish tv.
I immediately killed motor and anchored over them.
I sent down a plain jig head on one pole and a Kastmaster on other, both wearing 1/2” crawler.
Very small bites but they were there.
In next hour and fifteen minutes caught maybe 8-9 Perch and probably 6 more Bows while lowering jigs.
Bites were extremely light and tough to set.
Actually had to drop jigs straight down and fast as possible to bypass trout.
7-8”ers and some up to 11”.
Even the 7”ers were filletable due to girth.
Probably my last trip, have to have knees replaced starting with first one mid Dec.
Sadly, struck out bad on the Eyes…..

It was a cool morning with some snow still left from the front the day before. Cool, but gorgeous with the clear blue skies and the geese passing over!

The air was in the mid 30’s when we arrived at the Chicken Creek Ramp about 6:30 and warmed to the upper 50’s by our 5 P.M. departure. The water stayed between 35 and 55 degrees. The winds were light for Strawberry.

We had decided to keep rainbows over 15” for my canning attempts. Our resolve was tested most of the morning as 8 out the first 9 bow we got were fat and healthy, but all 14 t o14.5”.

We trolled most of the time at 1 to 2 MPH working SnG’s, tube jigs, and occasionally pop gear or a crankbait. We did stop a couple of times to jig, but didn’t find that more productive than trolling. We tipped almost everything with crawler or chub pieces. Unlike most trips last year, the crawlers seemed to catch more fish than chub meat.

At about 8:30 we hit a good wave of fish and Jon got a cutt over 18”. It was his best for the year so far, so he took a picture for the Summer Challenge. At the same time, I got a 16” bow so we finally had one for canning.

We got about 5 or 6 cutts for each rainbow on average. I decided to borrow a trick from Kent and bought a counter to keep track of the fish. We had caught 25 or so by the time I remembered to use it ☹. The counter said 60 at the end of the day, so we figured about 90 total.

The first two hours produced most of the bows and we made a plan to return to that area later in the day if we hadn’t found more of them. After all 14.5 is almost 15, right?

We had 3 in the well by 2 P.M. so we went back, and the area only produces cutts. We did try one more area before we left and found 2 more including the best of the day. It was almost 19 and Jon ended up with the best bow and the best cutt of the day at 20”.

Most of the fish we caught trolling came in less than 20 FOW and the one s we got jigging were 30 to 40’ down.
It was a really fun day with few really slow periods and resulted in the most total fish caught and the most rainbows in a single day for Jon and I.

I am thinking of changing nets.

We had a rubber net that now resides about 60' deep in the Berry unless someone has snagged it. In the excitement of catching that 6" fish I just set the net down for the water to hold it for me.  Most likely it's still holding it.
I liked this net other than the weight and the large amount of resistance in the water.  When replacing it I bought a net that has the rubber coating on the strings.  There is nowhere near as much resistance with this net but it has a drawback that all but drives me mad.  Sometimes a hook goes through one of the strings. (not as bad as uncoated nets however) After this happens it is battle on to get the hook back. (Buggar does not believe in catch and release.)  Treble hooks are a real nightmare at times.  (Flopping fish in the net with a loose treble just waiting to grab anything it can.)
Most times I just reach over the side of the boat and remove the hook.  When grandkids are there, inexperienced anglers, or the fish is a good un the net comes into play.
Is there a net out there that has the qualities of a rubber net without the weight or water resistance?" ["date_published"]=> string(25) "2024-11-19T19:09:38+00:00" ["date_modified "]=> string(25) "2024-11-19T19:09:38+00:00" } }
